The Bickershaw Programme: Cheech and Chong.

Cheech and Chong are a comedy team, a Chicano( Mexican American ) and a Chinese. Their humour is very American and very stoned. They started by playing separately in rock groups , got into comedy and met up in Vancouver , where Chong was working with an improvisational group the City Workd and Cheech was writing for an underground paper. They teamed up and moved to Los Anglees and began to get usccessful when they phased out situation comedy and replaced it with dope scene satire. Apart from dope their material covers the media , the war and politics.

Many of the references in their work may not be familiar with an English audience , who are used to a different brand of comedy with greater emphasis on the absurd and surreal. But what Cheech and Chong lack in common experience they make up for in energy  - and its good to see comedy being exposed in a rock festival context.
