  Local press accounts.

Big thanks goes to Kieran McCann for the donation of his collection of cuttings  from the local press. Unfortunately in 1970 ( this being the second year that the festival was held in Plumpton ) some of the novelty  had worn off for the local press. Although there is the usual litany of complaints , fears by locals that they will be murdered in their beds and Tory MP's complaining about the noise and drug taking carried on from the previous year- there are less details about the bands and festival logistics .

Day two report -7th August 1970.

POP CAN'T MADDEN M.P.
By Richard Sharp.

Villager Mr Martin Madden , M. P. for Hove and the man who tired to curb the Plumpton Pop Festival was hailed last night as the " greatest public relations man in the world. "This tongue in cheek "tribute"- apparently referring to the nation-wide publicity which followed the High Court hearing - was a made during an announcement at the end of last night's festival "dress rehearsal"

Six bands including Sussex University's very own band Jellybread , provided the music. And if this concert was anything to go by, the people of Plumpton will have very little to complain about. Noise was kept to a minimum , the music was switched off promptly at 10: 45pm and the 200 security guards, including off duty soldiers and policemen- reigned supreme .

It really looks as if the festival organiser Mr Brian Sommerville meant it when he vowed to show the village that a well run pop festival need not be a nuisance. About 3000 young people camped out at the festival site last night. Some slept in the open air or in cars and others crowded into huge marquees provided by the organisers.

The Festival, organised by the National Jazz Federation , ends on Sunday after three days of almost non stop music. The organisers hope for a total attendance of at least equal to last years figure , when 60,000 fans made the Plumpton Pilgrimage. Facilities at the racecourse are now bigger and better than ever before, with more toilets, , more food , more shops and a new water main.
The main festival starts at 3: 00pm. with Family topping the bill tonight- supported by The Groundhogs , Rare Bird and Steamhammer.
